Specialty Food: Retailers Promote Savings on Snacks for Super Bowl LVIII

Whether consumers are watching for the game, the halftime show, the commercials, or the glimpses of Taylor Swift cheering for her boyfriend, the Super Bowl is the party of the year.

A survey from Prosper Insights & Analytics found that 76.9 percent of adults in the U.S. plan to watch the game this year, which pits the San Francisco 49ers against the Kansas City Chiefs for the National Football League championship on Feb. 11. Among those planning to watch the Super Bowl, about 43 percent say they plan to throw or attend a party. The average spend on such parties is projected to be $102.27, with 80.2 percent of that going toward food and beverages.

Food retailers have assembled an array of offers to attract these hungry fans. A perusal of a handful of retailers’ websites shows that operators are promoting the usual suspects: wings, burgers, ribs, hot dogs, pizza, chips and dips, party platters, and, of course, beer.

According to the January Consumer Digest from Kroger’s 84.51° data analytics arm, 66 percent of Kroger shoppers surveyed are planning to celebrate Super Bowl LVIII. Chips and dips are the most popular item these consumers plan to serve, cited by 73 percent of those surveyed, followed by pizza at 52 percent and alcoholic beverages at 45 percent.
