84.51° Mission (Project Team): Enterprise Price & Promotion
Describe your role as a Business Acceleration Consultant.
I work on a project-based team that consults teams at both Kroger and 84.51° on how to use analytics to develop more effective pricing and promotion strategies.
What was your experience like in the Development Program?
I had a fantastic experience in the Development Program. I started alongside 9 other consultants in the program and we instantly hit it off and became close friends which was great since I didn’t know anyone else when I first moved to Cincinnati. On the professional side, the various trainings, case studies, and other events during the Development Program helped me learn a ton about 84.51°, Kroger, the grocery industry, and how to be an effective consultant.
How do you believe the 84.51° Development Program compares to other comparable programs?
I think one of the unique aspects of 84.51°’s development program is how well it prepares you to succeed in your first role in the company. I was placed in my first role about 6 months after starting, and I felt I was immediately able to be a “full” team member and add value from the very first day on the team.
How do you believe the Development Program equipped you for success at 84.51°?
As I mentioned early, I think the Development Program does a fantastic job at equipping you for success in your career at 84.51°. One of the focuses of the Development Program is training in the various analytic tools such as 84.51° Stratum that we have available at 84.51°. This training paid off when I was placed on my first team and was considered a go-to person for the various tools since I had just gone through all the trainings. It felt great to be a valuable resource to the rest of the team right from the beginning.
What did you learn from the Development Program that you have transferred into your current role?
One thing that I transferred into my current role was my knowledge of the various teams of 84.51° and Kroger as well as the network I was able to build while in the Development Program. The program does a great job of exposing you to the various teams throughout the business. Additionally, I stay in touch regularly with the other members of my Development Program class, so I am constantly able to learn about what’s going on in the rest of the business.
Is there anything you wish you had known about the Development Program prior to enrolling?
In hindsight, I wish I would have known more about how wide the breadth of work is that 84.51° does. Despite interning at 84.51,I was only familiar with the merchandising side of the company and was largely unaware of the other teams/missions. Luckily, the Development Program does a great job highlighting all the work that the various teams at 84.51° do.
What has been the most memorable experience or favorite project you’ve worked on?
I did a deep-dive analysis on what Kroger’s strategy should be for fresh tomatoes. It was fascinating diving into the data to identify opportunities for Kroger to improve and to compare Kroger’s current strategy to its competitors.
What advice would you give students who are interested in working in the consulting industry?
I would recommend reaching out to anyone you can that works in the type of roles you may be interested in. Being able to build your network and learn from others’ experiences is super valuable and will only help you in your career.
What’s your favorite part about working at 84.51°?
My favorite part about working at 84.51° is the people I get to work with on a daily basis. They’re not just my co-workers but many of them are also my friends outside of work.
What do you like to do in your free time, outside of work hours?
Outside of work I enjoy being active and being outdoors whether that be going to the gym, playing basketball with friends, cycling, or hiking at the various parks in the area. I also love cooking, reading and spending time at my favorite coffee shop.
